ABOUT THE ROLE / PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Short Description / Purpose of Job

Ensures the success of the project by being responsible for all mining related design coordination and interfacing with all other engineering disciplines providing accurate and timeous information to other stakeholders, enabling optimal decisions in all facets of the project.

The mining engineer will support the Business Manager in managing Sasol’s investment in the Alexander opencast mine as well as developing and implementing the operating model (e.g. contracting mining).

 

Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

  1. Basic Development project phase (including Mining Study):
  • Act as a technical lead in managing the mining design consultant and related studies in the development of an optimal open cast strip mine solution.
  • Compile the engineering scope of work, and ensure it translates into cost estimates for various phases of the project.
  • Define, technically justify, motivate and drive optimal mining improvement initiatives through technical investigations.
  • Specify the requirements for mining engineering drawings.
  • Ensure due diligence, throughout various stages/phases of the project lifecycle preliminary layout and up to the final engineering design.
  • Ensure timely signoff of mining design solution from relevant Sasol functions and stakeholders.
  • Develop organization structure for project execution and mine operation.
  • Compliance to project objectives project schedule, quality, budget and cash flow.
  • Collaborate to compile capital and operating cost-estimation.
  • Ensure that all safety and regulatory issues have been addressed and resolved.
  • Adhere to the best practices, standards and procedures of the company.
  • Supervise and peer reviewing the work of other engineers.
  • Identify mining engineering deviation, threats, risks and opportunities through monitoring.
  • Analyse deviations, understand the cause of the deviation and eliminate/manage/control re-occurrence.
  • Ensure quality of technical proposals and ensure applicable technical governance has been applied through formal peer review process.
  • Review mining engineering design drawings for completeness, accuracy and to ensure that it satisfies the intended scope of work.
  • Develop mining engineering design specifications.
  • Interpret and translate business requirements into an engineering strategy to enable OME to safely meet production targets.
  • Translate OME project team strategy into team working model.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation.
  • Notify/inform of changes in resourcing needs.
  • Report on budget utilisation, forecasting and changes.
  • Provide efficient and high-quality services to stakeholders.
  • Identifying, evaluation and selection of Mining Contractor:
  • Assist with negotiating with a mining contractor to realize the lowest capital and operating cost per ton.
  • Oversee the management of external service providers.

 

  1. Execution phase
  • Manage the integration and battery limits between boxcut development and mining contractor operations.
  • Maintain healthy and stable relationships with contractors and consultants.
  • Oversee the safety of external service providers.
  • Active practicing of interpersonal skills to ensure productive working relationships and to work with, or through, other internal and/or external resources in the organisation is applied to get work accomplished.

  • Innovation:
  • Compliance to and corrective mitigation of all regulatory permit requirements, such as EMP, WUL and Waste License.
  • Update of Financial Provision as required for the Rehabilitation Plan.

 

Formal Education

University Bachelor’s Degree

Min Experience

10+ relevant years’ experience in opencast coal mining.
