PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for project, engineering, commissioning and start-up support, as well as coordinating and leading activities and interventions that will ensure the conceptualisation, design, development and implementation of optimal engineering solutions on specialized petrochemical/chemical projects.
The emphasis will mainly be on ecoFT projects for both licensing and equity participation project support.
The incumbent will act as consultant on a multitude of Mechanical engineering topics and must be willing and available to travel abroad on short notice for extended periods of time.
JOB SPECIFICATION
The Mechanical Engineer II role utilizes an authoritative level of experience in Mechanical engineering to manage and/or execute the design, engineering, development and modification of complex and/or specialised mechanical equipment and plant in accordance with established engineering principles, standards and codes of practice to satisfy business requirements.
The role is required to manage third party resources to deliver the required outputs.
The role is required to have a broad base of Mechanical engineering knowledge and competence, in particular relating to mechanical equipment (pressure vessel design, piping systems, rotating equipment etc.) design/fabrication/testing, and in the fields of selection of equipment and materials for use in process plants. This will require the engineer to have sound knowledge of Pressure Equipment Regulation (PER) requirements, fabrication and construction of equipment practices, and International Health and Safety Standards and Codes.
The role should also have a good understanding of project principles.
Key accountabilities for the role include:
- Providing and coordinating all Mechanical discipline input (from design to fabrication) related to a specific project.
- Support with defining, setting, development and compliance enforcement of project specific Mechanical standards, philosophies and best practices for Mechanical Engineering, incorporating lessons learnt and latest industry trends.
- Support with defining and implementing Mechanical Engineering quality assurance standards to uphold the highest local and international standards.
- Project Mechanical scope definition and development, as well as ensuring contractual fulfilment of project specific Mechanical scope.
- Take accountability for the Mechanical engineering technology selection
- Identify, manage and mitigate Mechanical technical risks.
- Mechanical quality plan execution.
- Input into end of job, and phase cost and schedule estimates.
- Ensuring necessary governance processes are in place to ensure technical quality and integrity.
- Managing project specific Mechanical related technical queries, concession requests, corrective action reports, decisions, correspondence and changes to ensure that they are effectively negotiated and resolved against cost, schedule and integrity.
- Support during the project technical reviews including PFD, P&ID, HAZOP/SIL and 3D Model reviews.
- Support and liaison with equity partners, licensees, other licensors, as well as engineering and construction contractors.
- Ensuring appropriate fit for purpose solutions are identified and engineered for value addition.
- This includes appropriate use of and compliance with agreed specifications, standards, procedures and Inherent Safe Design.
- Technical bid evaluations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- University Bachelor’s Degree Engineering: Mechanical
- Professional registration (will be required within reasonable time after appointment)
- Post graduate qualification may be beneficial
EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Minimum 6 years relevant experience, covering:
- Extensive experience in multi-discipline front end and detail engineering, as well as project execution.
- Familiar with interfaces with all engineering disciplines.
- Expertise in vessel and piping design, rotating equipment selection, material selection, fabrication and QA/QC inspection.
- Experience in working with project partners, licensees and licensors
